Edinburgh Airport is based at Turnhouse approximately 5 and a half miles outside of the City of Edinburgh. The airport is owned and operated by BAA. The airport as it currently stands was constructed in 1977 and has received numerous upgrades over the years but still consists of a single runway and terminal.
Getting to the airport by car
The airport is on the outskirts of the city, and therefore it takes approx 25mins to drive from the city centre. The airport entrance is on the A8 Glasgow to Edinburgh road and therefore can be easily reached from the M8 (Glasgow), M9 (Stirling) and M90 (Perth) motorways. There is a wide variety of short stay and long stay parking on site as well as additional parking nearby.
Getting to the airport by public transport
There is no current direct rail link to the airport. Work is currently underway to construct a light rail link as part of the Edinburgh Trams network however this is unlikely to start operating until 2011/2012. There are bus services from rail stations at the nearby Fife Circle line and there are numerous bus services that operate to the airport, either as direct shuttle services (such as Airlink 100 by Lothian Buses, and AirDirect 747 by Stagecoach), or as local bus services from in and around Edinburgh and surrounding areas.
